AFS is a 501(c3) nonprofit that provides Credit Counseling, Finance Education, Debt Management Plans, Bankruptcy Counseling, Homebuyer Counseling and Student Loan Counseling.  Our mission is to empower people to improve the quality of their lives through financial education and counselling.  American Financial Solutions is a division of the North Seattle Community College Foundation. 

Accounting Assistant

GENERAL FUNCTION:  Responsible for performing accounting functions including updating marketing reports, performing bank reconciliations, assisting with month end closing, updating monthly and quarterly creditor fair share and disbursement reports, and assisting with pulling data for state compliance renewals and examinations.  Also, assist as backup for payment processing duties such as daily banking transfers, processing client payments and disbursements, and data entry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage benefits including Kaiser Permanente, Guardian and Colonial Life (Enroll, reconcile and pay)
  • Perform bank reconciliations
  • Reconcile payroll journal entries
  • Update monthly and quarterly revenue and disbursement reports
  • Assist with monthly closings and annual financial audits
  • Assist with state compliance examinations
  • Research and solve payment discrepancies
  • Analyze and adjust general ledger accounts as needed
  • Assist with unclaimed property filings
  • Prepare analysis of accounts, as required
  • Learn Payment Processing job duties in order to provide back-up for that position
  • Filing and copying
  • Assist Finance Department staff as necessary

Experience, Education and Licensure 

  • Strong computer aptitude with the ability to proficiently use Microsoft programs with strong skills in Excel.
  • Two-year degree required, four-year degree preferred.
  • Or equivalent experience/training in bookkeeping, payment processing, accounting or cash management
  • Or any combination of the above
  • QuickBooks experience a plus

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from managers, staff, employees
  • Ability to effectively present information to management, staff, employees, and vendors
