These are some of the best movies about money to come out of Hollywood.

The Best Movies About Money

“It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946)

It’s impossible to talk about movies about money without mentioning one of the most beloved movies of all time, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The film follows George Bailey (played by Jimmy Stewart) on a journey guided by a guardian angel who teaches him what’s most important in life and that money isn’t everything.

“Wall Street” (1987)

The blockbuster hit “Wall Street” made the phrase, “greed is good,” famous during the height of mass consumption culture in the late eighties. Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) convincingly portrays a money obsessed stockbroker in New York who tempts a young broker (Charlie Sheen) down the shady and dangerous path of insider trading, fast cars and fast women.

“Jerry Maguire” (1996)

The famous quote, “Show me the money!” earns this movie a spot on the list. In it, successful sports agent Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is fired from his company after penning a mission statement suggesting they take on fewer clients and therefore make less money. After being fired, he loses everything, but heartwarmingly discovers what – and who – is truly important in life.

“The Big Short” (2015)

This film stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and is based on the 2010 novel by Michael Lewis. It explores the build-up of the United States housing bubble and the stories of a group of investors who discovered just how flawed and corrupt the market had become leading up to the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

“Catch Me If You Can” (2002)

This biographical drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. Before he turned 19, Abagnale successfully executed cons worth millions of dollars. Abagnale became so talented at forging checks that the FBI turned to him for help catching other criminals. The film also stars Tom Hanks as an FBI agent pursuing Abagnale, but his character always ends up just one step behind.
