Becky House is NFCC Financial Educator of the Year

Becky House has been named the 2019 NFCC Financial Educator of the Year. House joined NFCC member American Financial Solutions (AFS) in 2001 as a credit counselor and has advanced to leading financial education programs locally and nationally for AFS and its partners.

House has more than 24 years experience in training and education development in non-profit organizations. An expert on budgeting, credit and debt management, House is highly sought after to provide trainings and develop education courses for nonprofits and civic groups.

Using a person-centered education approach to protect and promote the client’s innate ability to learn from their experiences, House helps promote wholeness and integration in her clients by focusing on their personal growth. This personal growth helps develop financial behaviors that result in improved financial capability.

“Becky is the consummate educator whose drive and dedication go far beyond the call of duty,” said Cindy Seremek, President of AFS.  “Her hands-on, all-in approach to teaching and affecting positive financial change in the community makes her a powerful force for good in our industry.”

House has presented classes in budgeting, credit and debt management for community agencies, private employers, local community colleges and universities such as the University of Washington Law School and Seattle Pacific University.

A recognized leader in the student loan industry, House helped work on the Student Loan Survival Guide, which covers everything from financial basics to options for student loan forgiveness for Washington State residents. She is the only non-attorney who provides student loan counseling for the Student Loan Workgroup, created by the Washington State Attorney General’s office.

House’s community outreach programs touch a wide variety of people including domestic abuse survivors, immigrants, homeless/at-risk youth and apprentices entering trade programs. She currently serves as the BankOn Chair, whose goal is to ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable bank or credit union accounts.

House received her award at NFCC Connect, the annual gathering of the nation’s largest and longest-serving network of nonprofits dedicated to financial well-being. The awards were presented the evening of September 17 in Arlington, Virginia.
